“The lyrics are very honest and very real,” she said. “Fans write in letters and I write songs about their lives.”
Nicole draws inspiration from her own experiences as well – the former homecoming queen didn’t always have it so great in school.
“I was the new girl and everyone is trying to figure out if they like you,” she said. “They threw stuff at me in class. One girl pushed me down in PE. I was surrounded by drama and made to feel like I wasn’t good enough … but it got easier.”
Nicole says she was tempted to fight back, but instead found solace in headphones tuned to worship radio and the uplifting vocals of artists like Natalie Grant.
But while music had always been her comfort food, Nicole says she never planned on being a singer growing up – she didn’t even buy records. Then, in a period of moratorium after graduating high school, she remembered singing in her grandfather’s church as a child.
“I remember crying because I was so confused, should I go to school or should I stay home?” she said. “I was just crazed … and God just said to me ‘You have to update plans in your life big time.’ And in that moment, I was like, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do, but I have to go for it.’”
But as much as she’s grown, Nicole says that a few old wounds will find their way into the album too.
“In one song, there’s a lyric about a girl getting things thrown at her in the classroom,” she said. “But I don’t want to give too much away.”
Are you beyond excited for Britt Nicole's new album and music?
